Voice recognition has always been fine on mine. In GrooveIP, my voice was terrible, but it let's you adjust the mic, and that helped a lot. See if your voice apps have mic settings. I think this is more an app problem than the A500, unless you use a cover or screen protector that covers the mic.

My two cents are that I think many droid devices have microphone issues, but I can say if you use apps that can boost the microphone level, it is somewhat better. I updated to 3.2.1 and skpe, grooveip and Acrobits Softphone seem better. Csipsimple and the voice/audio apps on the market, nor voice regognition seem that good though.

Are you getting sound artifacts, of just poor quality recording? Please visit Acer Iconia A500/A501 and Skype/Gtalk for details.

I'm also experiencing this issue -- and, thanks to the description earlier, I see that I have an older 501 which has the mic under the glass on the left. I bought mine from AT&T. Maybe tomorrow I'll see if they have others in their inventory and see if they will advise. Annoying, though, because I just tossed the original box today...grrrr.

I have used my iconia A500 since June and has always experienced very poor mic quality. The only work around is to bring the tab right up to my mouth if I want to be understood at all in voice chat applications (tried it with Talk, Skype, Yahoo, Oovoo and Tango with similar, unaccteable results). Currently running 3.2.
Definitely a serious flaw that, had I detected it before paying $450 at BB would have made me choose either the iPad, xoom or Asus.
Other than this deal breaking flaw, the tab is great.
