YouTube version 5 released!

Aug 19, 2013 - 10:43 PM - by Frederuco

So, you may be wondering why an app update gets a topic like this, well because Google has been hard at work getting a totally new YouTube experience ready for us.

The UI is a card style layout and is very clean. I have used it and it is pretty sweet. The Tablet layout has been done very well. It has slide out navigation bar in portrait and the bar is always present in landscape which IMO just makes sense.

The best new feature is in app multi-tasking. You can make a video smaller by swiping down and to the right, tapping the down arrow in the top left or by hitting the back button. You will be taken to the previous screen and you can browse for more videos. Sadly the little video does not keep playing if you switch to other apps and the audio does not continue (maybe next update?) You can just swipe the little video back up to the left to make it bigger again.

An indiegogo (cloud-funding) Project Called CloudLocker Will Offer a Personal Cloud

Jun 26, 2013 - 10:41 AM - by dgstorm

We caught wind of an intriguing little cloud-funding project called CloudLocker. It's on the lesser known cloud-funding site "indiegogo," but that doesn't diminish its potential value. CloudLocker aims to offer users the ability to have their own personal cloud storage. It's basically the opposite of typical cloud storage in that you store your data on your own personal hard drive at home. What is unique about it is that it creates a mini-personal network that allows you to access your personal cloud storage from anywhere you choose, and it even lets you give others limited access to it as you see fit.

The point of CloudLocker is for folks who want to access their personal data from anywhere, but do not trust leaving their stuff on far away data centers from companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google or Dropbox, etc. Here's a quick quote from the indiegogo site describing it,

What is CloudLocker?

CloudLocker is the new cool kid on the block, offering a private and secure alternative to public cloud storage. While online cloud storage services have become very popular in recent years, users are growing more concerned about potential security breaches and losing control of their personal data stored in the Cloud. CloudLocker lets you keep your files in your possession, while also giving you all the convenience of cloud technology coupled with an innovative approach to sharing and control over your digital media.

Acer Focuses on Pure Android; Says it's Great As Is and Won't Try to Fix It

Jun 14, 2013 - 1:10 PM - by dgstorm

Acer has publicly renewed its commitment to the pure Android experience. They declared emphatically that they will stick to the stock experience because the Android experience is great as is. Here's a quote with the details,

We found from our previous experiences of creating Android UIs that they are very difficult to maintain, especially keeping track with Google's migrations," explained S T Liew, the President of Acer's global smartphone division.

"Android actually does a great job at serving up the right user experience and it allows people to migrate from one Android phone to another with relative ease.

"With each phone we assess its main features and we enhance those experiences with small UIs, such as the camera app or the note taking capabilities and multi-tasking tools on the Acer Liquid S1."

For Acer this approach makes business sense too, as the various enhancements generally don't require too much input for a decent return.

"We don't have to rewrite Android," said Allen Burnes, Acer's VP of Smartphones for EMEA, "the overhead we put into that is relatively low, but the consumer benefit is very high.

"People know Android, they like it, and we don't want to try and change their behaviour."
Now, if we could only get other manufacturers to follow Acer's example...
