Acer has publicly renewed its commitment to the pure Android experience. They declared emphatically that they will stick to the stock experience because the Android experience is great as is. Here's a quote with the details,
We found from our previous experiences of creating Android UIs that they are very difficult to maintain, especially keeping track with Google's migrations," explained S T Liew, the President of Acer's global smartphone division.
"Android actually does a great job at serving up the right user experience and it allows people to migrate from one Android phone to another with relative ease.
"With each phone we assess its main features and we enhance those experiences with small UIs, such as the camera app or the note taking capabilities and multi-tasking tools on the Acer Liquid S1."
For Acer this approach makes business sense too, as the various enhancements generally don't require too much input for a decent return.
"We don't have to rewrite Android," said Allen Burnes, Acer's VP of Smartphones for EMEA, "the overhead we put into that is relatively low, but the consumer benefit is very high.
"People know Android, they like it, and we don't want to try and change their behaviour."
Now, if we could only get other manufacturers to follow Acer's example...

While Acer is obviously no stranger to making Android tablets, for the most part their PC business has been all Microsoft. That is about to change, however. Apparently Acer is branching out and plans to make an Android All-in-One PC. Here's a quote with the details,
The Acer all-in-one (AIO), due to be announced next week, will pack an Intel 3GHz Core i5 4430 "Haswell" processor and run Android.
Acer confirmed the AIO with CNET on Thursday.
Expect this trend to pick up steam as PC vendors announce new systems based on Intel's upcoming Haswell and Bay Trail chips. Intel is already dropping not-so-subtle hints that Android laptops running on the Bay Trail chip are on the way and will be priced between $200 and $300.
Android notebooks? Yep, Intel says, and they'll only cost $200
Acer's new AIO system will go for less than $400 at some resellers, though most listings put it about $425. Some are higher than $425.
As you can see, the intel from Intel suggests they too will get in on the action and start offering PC alternatives using Android instead of Windows. With Microsoft so far behind in the mobile world, can they really afford to start losing ground in the PC world as well?

There is nothing wrong with aiming high, but some goals are a bit loftier than others. Acer's senior VP Scott Lin confirmed a new 10-inch Iconia A3 tablet will will be coming this summer. Furthermore, without divulging any specs or offering even a glimpse of the device he also shared Acer expects to sell 10 Million total tablets this year, and wants the A3 to contribute 2 Million of that 10 Million figure.
Despite these "pie in the sky" plans, the growth rate of Android tablets in general world-wide is increasing rapidly, so it is possible Acer could hit these goals. Here's a quote with more of the details,
Lin hopes it'll make up some of the 10 million slates the outfit aims to sell in 2013. He also announced a refresh for the $150 Iconia B1 this summer with a dual-core CPU, updated design and 1GB of ram, and said that 1.5 million units of that model have shipped so far this year. The company would like to move another 1.5 million by year's end along with 5 million of the recently announced 8-inch Iconia A1 tabs and 2 million Iconia A3s to make up the balance. Considering that competitor ASUS sold 3 million tablets in Q1 and has the hit Nexus 7 to peddle, it seems a lofty goal for Acer -- especially since it only reluctantly leaped into tablets not so long ago.

Acer has just announced yet another tablet at it's New York Press Event, the Acer Iconia A1. The same Android tablet leaked by a French retailer a few weeks back. It's going on sale in the US later this month for $169 for the 8GB version. Yes you heard that right, $169! $199 for the 16GB version.
Spec-wise, it measures 11.1mm thick, runs a 1.2GHz quad-core processor from MediaTek, and is topped off by a 7.9-inch IPS display with 1,024 x 768 resolution. Pretty decent specs for a budget friendly tablet. It also has 8 or 16GB of internal storage, as well as built-in 3G.
