Some folks over at XDA have been able to root the Acer Iconia A500, and have shared the juicy details. The root is not without its hiccups, so make sure you read the full thread to get all the ins and outs before trying. It could save you an hour or two. Here's some instructions and a download link:

How to:
1. The tablet should be already upgraded to ICS 4.0.3[LEAK] for A500.
2. Download this archive. Unpack it to any place.
3, On a tablet: "Settings" -> "Applications" -> "Development" -> "USB debugging" switch on.
4. Сonnect the tablet to the computer.
5. Open the directory with the unpacked archive. Execute file: for windows - runit-win.bat; for Linux - runit-linux.sh.
The root is received!
6. Now you will have to install the following programms:
SuperUser APK
Titanium Backup

ATTENTION!
Don't install Busybox! It is already installed and established! If you reinstall it, some programs will become unable to access root permissions!

This method uses the 'mempodroid' exploit and some workings out by ZeroNull and vdsirotkin (4pda.ru).

PS: Command "mount -o remount,rw /system" for directory /system (partition) - works perfectly!

Here is a bit of news that we didn't see coming. Apparently you can already pre-order the Acer Iconia A700 tablet from Amazon Germany. This new flagship tablet from Amazon includes the following specs:

• 10.1 Display - HD (1920x1200)
• NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-Core, 1.3GHz
• 1GB RAM
• 32GB Storage
• Bluetooth
• Android 4.0
• 9,800 mAh

The A700 also comes with a 5-megapixel main camera and a front-facing one capable of capturing HD video. Furthermore, it includes Wi-Fi, HDMI port, 3G connectivity (where applicable), and a slot for microSD cards. The device goes for 479 Euros. Acer just released a new app that is designed to help users download the new Ice Cream Sandwich update to their Iconia A500 or A510 Tab. Although several users have been able to successfully get the update, the app claims that it is necessary to make the process run more smoothly. We have confirmation from one of our members in the forums that the A500 is also now getting the OTA update of Ice Cream Sandwich! This one came as a surprise, as the only confirmation we had was that the A100 would be getting the update soon. It's great to see Acer taking care of their customers. Yum! Ice Cream Sandwich!
